Did you know that years ago, people did not have access to the modern world of medicine in the form of pills or liquid medicine? These type of treatment is called alternative medicine in our modern world. Many healers in the ancient time assessed the patient’s emotion condition on top of their physical symptoms. They incorporate a “whole person” concept rather than just merely the physical signs of illness. This is rather radically different from traditional medicine today.
In reality, when I visited Singapore four years a go for taking care of a friend who had undergone a brain surgery, I had noticed in that hospital a big branch of alternative medicine which they called: Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for short. It was a huge section in that hospital alone. In this sense, I can infer that people do believe in this type of therapy.
Why Alternative Medicine Survive?
In the fast pace world, people want to be cured almost instantly. The demand for medicines and treatments that could do so is very high. Most healthcare professionals today are taught to assess physical symptoms and base their treatments on that, without much consideration of the person’s emotional or intellectual state. On the other hand, the alternative medicine has survived throughout the year in the field of medicine as it considers people as a complete person. Most people, including you, probably don’t even think about massage as a type of alternative medicine.
Through the years, every country has used their own forms of alternative medicines and therapy. For example in Europe, two type of healers used to treat people with medical problems: the physicians or the folk healers. The folk healers appealed to the poorer factions of society, in that they used natural treatments that were more affordable and easier to come by.
Folk healers were often highly respected in these impoverished sections of society. Folk healers often incorporated philosophy and religious faith into their healing practices. This helped to strengthen a sick person’s mind and spirit, as well as his body. Eventually, folk medicine evolved into the traditional medicine we are familiar with in today’s world.
Future of Alternative Medicine
Despite the dominance of traditional medicine in the world today, there is still a place for alternative medicine. It is alive and well, and used by many people around the world through massage therapy, acupuncture, bioelectromagnetic therapy, aromatherapy, herbal remedies, meditation, and many other forms of alternative treatments – see below. Many physicians now support many of these treatments, making them less alternative.
The origins of alternative medicine were very forward thinking. Holistic medicine has survived through the millennia because it has real usage. They do not have the immediate side effect that many drugs and treatments have. Therefore, many people has opt to consider the treatment using this new method.
